ELIZABETHAN STYLE CARVED OAK DINING TABLE

a

With a few exceptions, all original early oak tables had all-round, or box stretchers. Modern tastes dictate that this is inconvenient for placing chairs under. So here we see 'evidence' that the long stretchers have been removed 'at some stage in the tables life' (note the cut ends of the tenons and remaining pegs, we actually fitted short sections and then cut them off) and replaced with paired centre stretchers. As a detail note, the 'newer' centre stretchers are dovetailed into the end stretchers from underneath, as it would be impossible to tenon them in after the base was constructed! A bonus of this is that they can also be easily removed, to make it easier to manoeuvre the base through tight corners.
