Cutting
the bottom joints of the posts into the sole plates. Note the swelling
at the top of the posts necessary to accommodate the joints for wall
plates, tie beams and principal rafters. Depending on shape, common
names for these swellings are 'jowel top' (splay-cut, straight jowel,
square-cut, rounded, moulded), 'splayed head' and 'gunstock head'. |
