TUDOR STYLE OAK CUPBOARD - DOORS
A detailed view of the top of the centre panel carving, showing part of the iron hinge and also where the carving has been pierced though. Many medieval cupboards, aumbries and hutches were treated similarly and they were probably used for storing food and kept in the great hall or solar. The piercing allowed ventilation and, to keep out bugs and insects, cloth or fine mesh was nailed on the inside. The back of this panel (now a door!) has traces of the cloth and the old nails still remain that were used to fix it!
